Fire Extinguisher Recharging and Servicing
A fire extinguisher is a pressurized cylinder with moving parts and a powder that settles over time. Left alone for years, the powder cakes, the O-rings dry out, and the unit sprays unevenly or clogs entirely. Recharging and periodic teardown service is what keeps an extinguisher functional and ready when you need it.
What a recharge involves
When we recharge an extinguisher, we discharge the unit completely, then clean all moving parts including the valve, stem, O-rings, and downspout, so the extinguisher will discharge properly on the fire you actually have. We also check the cylinder, handle, and gauge for damage before the unit goes back into service.
The six-year teardown
Every six years, California requires a full teardown and recharge. The purpose is to get the powder loose again so it sprays evenly with no clogs. Six years of sitting on a bracket compacts the agent, and compacted powder does not come out the way it needs to.
Hydrostatic testing
Hydrostatic testing pressure-tests the cylinder itself to confirm it can still safely hold its charge. The interval runs every 5 to 12 years depending on the extinguisher type, and the test has to be performed by trained personnel.
When an extinguisher comes out of service for testing or repair, it cannot simply be left empty on the wall. It has to be replaced with equivalent protection while it is gone. We handle the swap so your coverage never lapses.
Service life
A fire extinguisher generally lasts about 12 years, with a six-year teardown and recharge along the way. Once a unit reaches the end of its life, or fails inspection, replacing it is usually more sensible than servicing it, and we will let you know which situation you are in.
A Note on UL listing
The UL listing, from Underwriters Laboratories, confirms a fire extinguisher meets regulations for function and durability. It also determines whether we can legally service it. We have had customers with private jets carrying extinguishers manufactured overseas, and because those units are not UL listed or certified, they cannot be serviced in America. If you are not sure whether your equipment is listed, we can check it during an assessment.
